How It Began
Following the Civil War, the West opened up when the gold rush was noised all over the country. Entrepreneurs from the east coast and mid-west hustled west to make their fortunes if not in gold, then in supporting those who sought it. Resorts and resort towns sprang up. Visitors can still see the remains of the resorts and resort towns that didn’t make it on ghost town tours of Colorado.
Colorado Springs was born in 1869 when General William Jackson Palmer of Pennsylvania noted not only the natural beauty of the area but its capacity to be a stunning resort town. By 1871, he had established a railroad to bring people to his town, but resort life wasn’t why they came. Some came for the mild, healthy air so good for treating tuberculosis. The majority came for the gold.
By the turn of the century, Colorado Springs was known as the “city of millionaires.” One of them, Spencer Penrose, built highways, a zoo, a shrine to Will Rogers, and of course, The Broadmoor.
The Broadmoor Resort Hotel
The pink stucco Mediterranean and Italianate buildings of the resort extend to the sides of the main hotel like arms embracing the crystal blue Cheyenne Lake. Famous sports figures, film stars, heads of state, and celebrities have stayed there.
Included in the hotel complex are spas offering 100 services like a pool, hair and nail salons, and a fitness center. Eighteen restaurants are available for your dining pleasure. Stables, hiking trails, paddleboats, and of course shopping are among only a few of the attractions on this most stunning example of Broadmoor real estate.
Experience the Ranch at Emerald Valley, the Broadmoor Fishing Camp, and the Cheyenne Lodge, now the Cloud Camp. See the vintage autos from the early car racing period at the Penrose Heritage Museum.
